1. Right hand drill –  This is your training hand where the palm is facing the cup. maintain the palm facing  during the entire back swing and follow through. Don’t allow the club face to turn to the right or left.

2. Left hand drill   -  This is your target hand which places the back of your hand towards the cup. The back of your left hand should stay on target towards the cup during the forward swing. Concentrate on not allowing your hand to venture to the right or left, keep the club face square with the cup.

Second exercise is to place five balls up to ten feet from the cup. Align your putter and ball with the cup then close your eyes.  visualize where the cup is and it’s distance. Now putt the balls using both hands and wait for the sound of the ball entering the cup. If not then you are not aligned properly to your target.

Would you like to play in a tournament with confidence? Consider the following:  Don’t use only your arms as power to get the golf ball out there, instead swivel your torso on the back swing and the follow through which generates power as a coil spring on release which is compounded by added power from your legs, the shoulders should swivel also.  With practice you can coordinate the body release with wrist release for even more energy being transferred to the ball, these mechanics seem un-natural at first. Remember to keep your head down through these exercises. Use your whole body for this power transfer.

To start your new golf swing use only your torso and legs. After this becomes automatic you can include other methods of accuracy and power. You should work on rotating your shoulders backwards and forwards following the club swing. A good exercise for this is to place a club on your shoulders behind your neck with hands griping both ends of the club with legs at shoulder spread meanwhile rotating the club clockwise (right handed golfers) then counter clockwise as with followthrough.

Consider your golf swing. The following are essential mechanics a golfer should work on for a great swing: The backswing is optimum if your shoulders swivel perfectly each time, the right forearm is parallel to your spine and your left wrist is flat, elbows and arms should form a triangle. These should enable a powerful and accurate ball strike everytime.

Many amateurs fail at making a solid hit because of two reasons. First, the right way of pivoting the wrist is done too late during the backswing because the takeaway is likely to be too low to the ground. Second, achieving a bad posture by swinging the club too far during the backswing, thinking this is the right way to gain power. However, taking note of a few things will help eradicate these flaws. Make sure a 45-degree angle exists between your left arm and the shaft of the club at setup. Your hands should remain as close to the ground as possible during the takeaway, while moving the head of the club upwards rapidly. Notice how your left arm is parallel to the ground and the shaft is perpendicular to it? This is about enough to prevent you from swinging your arms too far at the back swing; thus, putting off bad posture and reverse pivot.

Golf is an outdoor game, so it’s best if you are able to practice chipping outdoors. However, one is tempted to hit chips indoors from time to time. You can perfect your chipping with the help of a wooden rod or a busted club shaft. Get the hang of your chipping technique – just make sure that your left wrist remains solid as the club passes through the area of impact. The rod or shaft you are using will hit your left side should your left wrist give way during the impact. Practice is the key to mastering your chipping.

Inconsistent swings are the nemesis of a delightful and low scoring game of golf. Don’t just swing during warm ups, instead think through the steps of a good and accurate golf swing. Now get out there and start enjoying productive golf.

Since My ship was making a port call at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico anyway, they dropped me and my truck off on the Pier.  This was the best transfer I experienced during my Naval career. I waved “bye” to my crew then departed.

Two days later I was on the golf course which lies in the low lands of the Naval Base.  The smells were incredible; a powerful tropical fruit smell. Banana, Mango, Papaya, trees to name a few, and all with fruit, were just off the fairways.  The papaya’s impressed me most; They were a good one to two feet in length and ten inches wide. And after chilling them are the best, refreshing fruit in the world.

But I digress.  The golf course had lush and well kept tee boxes, fairways, and the greens were beautiful with no dead grass anywhere.  But it was not perfect golf.  It rained almost every day, and the chance of getting rained on while golfing was fair to good.

All in all it was great golf with no worries other than fighting the golf demons which deflect a golfers club where the result is a bad follow through, or the ball doing it’s own thing usually not what I intended.

If you have the time and you are a golfer, try golf in the Caribbean, in Puerto Rico or St Croix. This area is perfect for golfers, as well as divers, hikers, mountain bikers and lovers of great authentic food.

I’ve walked the course, which is an excellent cardiac work-out. This should be done in the morning from June to early September, due to higher temperatures during midday. Most golfers take advantage of the gas powered golf carts; electric power is no match for the steep and numerous hills which encompass the entire course. Their batteries would run out before completing 18 holes. Even then some sections of the cart path are of such a steep grade, the centrifical clutch on these carts have a difficult challenge in getting golfer and clubs to the crest.

Running the entire course are creeks, marshes and ponds with the accompanying sound of wildlife and the smell of pine mixed with fresh, crisp air. Due to the numerous hills and trees separating fairways, there is usually a feeling of being alone due to stone silence. This course supplies human battery recharging. Every time I golf there I leave well satisfied in all senses.

More later on this hidden jewel north of Ellijay. Where everyone is laid back, and love golf.
